Listers -
I just sent a post to mich-chat regarding a Michigan mini-tour I did with a
friend, 28 June to 2 July. This is late, but I had to work, do chores, etc.
Most of what we saw was expected, but some was lister worthy.
When we visited on the 28th, the fields around the corner of Kendall and
Prospect in Washtenaw County had been cut except for a field full of very large
thistles. In the heat of the afternoon, we had no Grasshopper Sparrows, no
Orchard Oriole, but we had one Dickcissel. Also, 2-3 Northern Mockingbirds were
heard along the Sharon roads.
On the same day, I heard a Prairie Warbler along Embury Road in Washtenaw.
It was NOT where it has been. It was further north on the east side of the
road in a low area with some larch. It was a ways out. There were no Hooded
Warblers to be had along Embury and the Cerulean Warblers were mostly quiet.
On the 29th we had 3 Henslow's Sparrows and 3-4 Sedge Wrens in the fields
across from the Rose Lake Headquarters building in Clinton County. There were
still male Yellow-headed Blackbirds flying at Nayanquing on the 29th and we also
saw a flying Least Bittern on that midday stop. We found Forster's Terns,
which have been nonexistant on my other trips north this year, at the small park
on the bay directly east of Pinconning.
On the 30th, we had a family of Upland Sandpipers at the corner of Kneeland
and Galbraith just NW of Mio in the Amish area. They are more easily seen
there before the fields have been cut for hay.
On the 1st, we had 30-40 Evening Grosbeaks at WPBO and two singing Tennessee
Warblers. On the Trout Lake loop on the same day we had a mixed group of
crossbills foraging together. The usual Connecticut Warbler was silent or gone,
but 2-3 Leconte's were still calling at 3.4 miles from M123 on 3344 and a
distant Connecticut called several times there. We had Olive-sided Flycatcher
along that stretch as well.
On the 2nd, we had 5-6 Dickcissel and 2 Grasshopper Sparrows north on a small
road off of Tuttle Road 0.5 miles west of M66, just south of Ionia
(previously posted by me). Along a track leading south off of the 3rd parking area on
the south side of Riverside as you come in from the east into Ionia SGA, there
was a singing Mourning Warbler.
I know it's hard to believe, but I did no county listing on this trip
whatsoever - just went with the flow, enjoyed the day, stopped and smelled the Showy
Ladyslippers, etc. Oh, yeah.
Take care. - Doug
