I am forwarding Tom Bartlett's report of birding in the eastern U.P.

> This weekend, Steve Henthorne of Newark, Ohio and myself traveled to
> the UP to see what was around. For the weekend we ended up with 44

> the Soo. Sunday we drove to Hulbert Bog area and then south back

> Saturday weather was not great with snow showers much of the day.
> Sunday
> was better but much colder. Most regular feeders were empty and
> more than
> half those with feed were dead. It was very strange for the
> eastern UP in
> winter. Chickadees didn't seem to be as common but goldfinch were

> Gulls were
> observed at the Drafter Dump on Saturday. Viewing these birds was
> very
> difficult because it was snowing hard and they were sitting down in

> dump. We first caught sight of them when an eagle got all the
> gulls up.
> The 2nd birds were easy to pick out in flight and Iceland/Glaucous
> were
> separate by size with the Glaucous equal to or larger than the
> Herring and
> the Iceland noticeably smaller. We observe 3 Iceland and 2
> Glaucous the
> first time an eagle got them up and then 3 each the second time.
> With a
