Greetings,

Perserverance paid off Sunday for a group waiting for the Keweenaw Co. Black-billed Magpie. After six hours it showed itself briefly about 2pm in tree tops along the powerline beyond the snow mobile trail and deer carcasses. Make sure that you hide quietly in the underbrush before the snow mobile trail (best vantage is on the left under the large white pine) so as not to make the bird nervous. It is definitly wary of people and human activity. See previous posts for further details and directions. Other species we enjoyed during the wait were Red Crossbill, White-winged Crossbill, Common Redpoll, Pine Grosbeak and several cooperative Pileated Woodpecker. Black-backed Woodpecker has also been seen in the past week at this location.

By the way, contributions of road kill to the pile, especially deer carcasses, would be much appreciated by the Magpie.

Good birding,

Rick Brigham

Douglas
