Good evening,

At 10:00am this morning, I located a male Black-backed Woodpecker in southwest Oscoda County.

I followed the excellent directions posted earlier by Steve Santner and Tom Pavlik. When you reach the "plateau" described by Tom, the stand of pine trees on the right really stick out as they did not suffer as much fire damage. The bird was a few dozen yards east of this little stand and did not seem bothered by me at all. I viewed it from 20 yards.

Tracking down the "tappers" is the way to go. I located only 2 Hairy Woodpeckers before I found the Black-backed. My total time spent on site was 20 minutes (not counting the long hike in).
