Listers -

Today, Monday the 1st, a group of us located a very nice, confiding male
Black-backed Woodpecker in the burn area in Oscoda County described in previous
postings. The directions given were quite clear and we had no trouble
finding the general location. The best area was indeed about a 20 minute walk
along the track from the parking spot.

There is a lot of suitable habitat and it took us over an hour of cruising
before we located our bird. We had 4 Hairy Woodpeckers, a Downy and 1-2
Pileated prior to that. Following tapping seems to be the best bet overall. The
Black-backs seem to be responsible for the larger pale patches of removed bark
on the trees, at least the ones without the obvious rectangular holes made
by Pileateds.

We also saw suitable habitat that had been worked by woodpeckers along
Valley Rd west of Mapes / 487.

Tipped off by Jeff Sommer, we stopped in Bay City
