A forwarded posting from Pat Underwood below.....

Greetings,

I’ve just returned from seeing a TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE that Jon Wuepper and Dave Vinnedge found around 10:25 a.m. this morning 12/15/07 in Cass Co. MI on their Niles CBC route.

The bird is in a rather difficult location to give directions to but I’ll try!

It is along Hand St. about ½ mile west of Berrien Co. Hand St. is a small N-S road that sits between Thomson Rd and Korn St. Note that in my MI Atlas& Gazetteer pg 19, Hand St. is not marked and Thomson Rd is spelled Thompson Rd! Hand St. IS marked in real life however…this location is about 1.75 miles south of Sumnerville in Cass Co and around 2 miles NE of Niles in Berrien Co.

The bird was first seen along a small creek called McKinzie in my map book, the bridge on Hand has solid cement sides (guard rails?) on it. There are various fruiting shrubs in this area. As of 11:30 a.m. we last saw it just south of the creek in a viburnum shrub next to a broken down “haunted” looking house on the east side of Hand St. There were a lot of gunshots in the area and the bird was rather jumpy at each shot.

Good Luck,

Pat Underwood
