UP Rare Bird Report for December 14, 2007

 

 

The eve of the start of the Christmas Bird Counts. Good luck, may you all have calm conditions and open water!

 

 

Highlights

 

WESTERN/CLARK’S GREBE*

Golden Eagle

Gyrfalcon

Thayer’s Gull

Iceland Gull

Snowy Owl

Black-backed Woodpecker

Boreal Chickadee

Northern Mockingbird

Bohemian Waxwing

 

 

Baraga County

Joe Youngman found a WESTERN/CLARK’S GREBE* in the Keweenaw Bay on the north side of L’anse on December 10th. The bird was too distant to determine the exact species. Kitt Wulf & Bob Seasor reported an immature GOLDEN EAGLE along M-28 by Parent Lake on December 10th. 

 

Dickinson County

Greg Cleary reported a good count of 100 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Crystal Falls on December 1st. Very impressive was Kay Kavanagh’s report of 350 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Iron River from December 3rd-10th. 

 

Marquette County

An adult grey-morph GYRFALCON was found by David Pavlik and seen by multiple observers in the Lower Harbor in Marquette from December 7-10th. The bird is eating well and may stay the winter. Scot Stewart and Loren Cliford reported a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD along Lakeshore Bldv. on November 30-December 1st. A BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was seen along County Road 478 southwest of Ishpeming on the 2nd. Another BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, along with 1 HOARY REDPOLL & 7 BOREAL CHICKADEES were seen up the Peshekee Grade on the 1st. A single BOREAL CHICKADEE & 3 GRAY JAYS were along the Wolf Lake Road on the 2nd. Also on the 2nd, an adult THAYER’S GULL was seen at the mouth of the Dead River. A second-year ICELAND GULL was at the mouth of the Dead on the 8th, and an adult THAYER’S/ICELAND GULL was on the 13th. Up to 8 GLAUCOUS GULLS and 2 GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS have been in Marquette in the last week as well. A flock of 38 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were in Beaver Grove on the 14th. 

 

Alger County

Luke Langstaff reported an excellent total of 17 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS feeding in diseased Jack Pines along Doe Lake Road on December 13th. He said they have been there for a while and even observed a NORTHERN GOSHAWK attempting to catch one.

 

Schoolcraft County

Erik Enbody & Phil Chayon reported a GOLDEN EAGLE scavenging on a road-killed deer along M-28 just west of Seney on the “Seney Strech” on December 3rd. 

 

Chippewa County

Rick Baetsen reported a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, 1 BOREAL CHICKADEE, 2 HOARY REDPOLLS, 4 GRAY JAYS as well as RED CROSSBILLS at Hulbert Bog on December 7th. Kirk Zulfelt had a SNOWY OWL along Prairie Road in Dryburg on the 7th. Kirk also had an ICELAND GULL and 6 GLAUCOUS GULLS at the Dafter Dump. Chris Neri has been hanging on at Whitefish Point recording the last few birds of the season. A male BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was present on the 6th, and a couple of HOARY REDPOLLS remain at the Gift Shop feeders. 

 

Mackinac County

David Pavlik reported a flock of 350 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at the Mackinaw Bridge overlook near the McDonalds on December 13th.
