Listers,
I spent Saturday in the middle of the lower peninsula and encountered lots
of Northern visitors. County by County as follows:
Gratiot
I started the day at Maple River SGA dipping on Short-eared Owls as is my
pattern in this county. I did have a Merlin where Blair Rd crosses the river.
Further North on Blair I had about 80 Snow Buntings accompanied by at least one
Lapland Longspur. Also at feeders on Blair I had the first of many groups of
Common Redpolls. On my way to look for open water (unsuccessfully) in Alma I
had another 100 or so Snow Buntings on Harrison Rd between Jerome & Begole.
Isabella
Roamed the Southwest corner for a while before finally relocating Ryan D's
Golden Eagle on the East side of Gilmore North of Fremont Rd in a tree WAY off
the road. Also had the first Shrike of the day on Gilmore. Found some open
water on Coldwater Lake viewed from the Southwest side at a little boat launch.
Had a blue Snow Goose and at least one Cackling Goose with the several
hundred Canadas. Had Redpolls at adjacent feeders. The only Evening Grosbeak of
the day was at a feeder on Coleman Rd. Found several Pine Grosbeaks feeding in
a bog on Vandecar Rd towards the County line.
Clare
Did not spend a lot of time but had a Shrike on Beaverton Rd near Five Lakes
and then found both Common Redpolls and a single Pine Grosbeak at the
feeders on the NE corner of Kapplinger & Surrey Rds.
Osceola
A bog with lots of berries on 3 Mile Rd East of M-66 held a couple of
feeding Pine Grosbeaks. Had Redpolls at a feeder on this road as well.
Mecosta
Had my first Raven in this County along M-66 near 22 Mile Rd. Had an
isolated flock of six Bohemian Waxwings in a tall bare tree in Barryton. Common
Redpolls & Pine Grosbeaks on 19 Mile near Chippewa Lake. In Big Rapids I picked
out at least one Bohemian in a group of at least 200 Cedars feeding at the
McKessy House 120 E Cedar St. Had a Shrike at 110th & 17 Mile. Figures - both
Bohemian sightings were in the same County.
Also had Redpolls in Montcalm and Ionia. Seems like they can be found in
most any County right now with diligent searching.
Good Birding,
Scott Jennex
