Listers,
A great start to December in Wayne & Monroe Counties today. First and best
was the continuing Northern Gannet, seen from Lake Erie Metropark near the
boat launch. I watched it fly up the river past Celeron Island around 9:15 am
and then back out into Lake Erie a few minutes later. (Robert Epstein saw the
Gannet later in the afternoon as well). Also present at LEMP were at least 3
Long-eared Owls. We observed lots of ice in areas that were wide open a week
ago.
After sneaking across the border to see the Snowy Owl in Ohio, I stopped at
Lotus Road in Southern Monroe County for the gulling. There were 4 Lesser
Black-backed Gulls (3 adult & one 3rd winter) and an adult Thayer's Gull with
several hundred each of Ring-bills and Herrings. I briefly saw a smaller,
dark-mantled gull but lost it in the transition from bins in the warm car to scope
in the bitter cold. I also took a pic of a Ring-billed Gull with yellow
tags. I seem to recall someone posting about that study and who to contact but I
can't find a copy of the email. If you know, please contact me off list with
the info.
On the way home I swung through Willow Metropark and had no problem locating
and photographing the previously reported Ross's Goose. The pond was frozen
and I know that others missed the goose towards the end of the day.
Happy Listing,
Scott Jennex
