Greg Links from "somewhere near Toledo" as he coyly puts it in his
Buckeye postings, sent me a photo of a Great Gray Owl photographed by
Sherrie Duris from the Toledo area on September 23rd at Cheboygan State
Park on the shores of Lake Huron. This is far too early for a
migrant/wintering bird. The photo of the bird shows considerable dark
feathering on the bird which combined with some of the description of
behavior of the bird by Sherrie, point to a young bird raised in that
area. Breeding Great Gray Owls in the Lower Peninsula would be big
news.
Sherrie describes the bird as "partially flying/hopping around branch to
branch." She photographed the bird on the park road off of U.S. 23 that
goes to the organization campground on Duncan Bay. This is the
southernmost of the two park access roads to Duncan Bay in the park.
