UP Rare Bird Report for September 28, 2006
Highlights
WESTERN/CLARK’S GREBE
LONG-TAILED JAEGER
Cackling Goose
Eared Grebe
Red Knot
Red-necked Phalarope
Sabine’s Gull
Parasitic Jaeger
Harris’s Sparrow
Keweenaw County
A HARRIS’S SPARROW was found at Hebard Park on September 24th.
Houghton County
Grant Soehnal found a WESTERN/CLARK’S GREBE on Portage Lake just east of the Michigan Tech Campus on September 25th.
Baraga County
Joe Youngman found a flock of juvenile SABINE’S GULLS at the head of the Keweenaw Bay on September 22nd. Originally 4 were seen, but the group of later arriving birders were able to bump that total up to 6 birds, which I believe may be a record high total for Michigan. Efforts to refind the gulls on the 23rd were not successful, but Joe Kaplan did turn up a basic plumaged EARED GREBE along with a HARRIS’S SPARROW.
Marquette County
Up to 3 HARRIS’S SPARROWS have been seen at the Moosewood Nature Center at Presque Isle Park from the 22-27th. Additional single HARRIS’S SPARROWS were found in the backyards of Keith Kepler and my own in the City of Marquette on the 22nd. David Pavlik had an immature blue-phase SNOW GOOSE at the Shiras Pool at Presque Isle Park on the 27th. Small numbers of CACKLING GEESE have been present along the waterfront in Marquette this week. A juvenile AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was present at the mouth of the Dead River on the 23rd. 2 unidentified JAEGER SPECIES were seen at the Big Bay Lighthouse during a lakewatch on September 24th. Other highlights from the lakewatch included 5 RED-THROATED LOONS and 6 SURF SCOTERS. Other notable sightings from Presque Isle Park this week included a RED-THROATED LOON on the 26th, and 2 SURF SCOTERS in the Upper Harbor.
Delta County
A RED KNOT was present at Peninsula Point on September 26th. Also present were 44 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS, along with 78 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 6 BAIRD’S SANDPIPERS. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was located at the Hunter Point National Forest Boat Launch.
Alger County
Scott Hickman reported a HARRIS’S SPARROW at his feeders on September 24th. 4 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were at the Chatham MSU Research Farm on the 26th. On the 27th, there were 12 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS at the Cleveland Cliffs Basin.
Chippewa County
Tom Auer had a juvenile LONG-TAILED JAEGER at Whitefish Point on the 23rd. Also present on the 23rd were 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS and a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE. Tom recorded a great waterbird flight on the 24th. Highlights included 65 SURF SCOTERS, 259 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, 5 RED-THROATED LOONS and 223 RED-NECKED GREBES. The Owl Banding program has been running since the 15th of September, and 18 NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS were banded on the 22nd. Other highlights this week from WPBO include 2 HARRIS’S SPARROWS and a unidentified JAEGER SPECIES on the 27th, 81 SURF SCOTERS on the 26th, and a FORSTER’S TERN on the 25th.
