My son, Grant, just called to say that he observed a Clark's/Western Grebe on the Portage while running along the trail, east of the Michigan Tech campus. It was in a bit of a skirmish with a Double-crested Cormorant and the Cormorant flew off. He was 30-40 yards from the grebe and noted the long slender neck with the neck being white in the front and black in the back, with a distinct demarcation. He also noted the light colored bill. He did not see the grebe when he ran back through the same location. He said it's very windy up there today so it may be blown around a bit.
He said that the best place to view it where he last saw it would be at the eastern-most gravel parking lot of the Michigan Tech campus. You can walk to the Portage path from there.
Good birding!
