All,
I was shocked by a 30 second visit from a male SMITH'S LONGSPUR on the
breakwall at Lexington in Sanilac County this evening. I initially saw it
peripherally as it flitted down towards the inner beach, not having seen enough to
know what it was at all, I pished and screech-owl whistled for a minute and
when that didn't work I gave up on it temporarily and went back to scoping the
beach to the North. When movement caught my eye again I pulled my bins up to
see the male SMITH'S on one of the huge chunks of the breakwall. He still had a
lot of alternate plumage and sat for about 25 seconds before flying further
out and disappearing into the boulders giving a great look at the 2 white
outer tail feathers on each side and the bright wing-bars. I searched for him
for another half hour to no avail. It was pretty windy but hadn't rained yet.
While walking back to the car I noticed that the gull flock up the beach was
scattering and scoped an immature JAEGER causing the fuss and chasing a
couple of the gulls further north.
Good birding,
Scott Jennex
