UP Rare Bird Report for September 21, 2006
Migration is progressing nicely in Upper Peninsula this week, with great numbers of thrushes, kinglets and sparrows being reported across the region. Warblers however are quickly diminishing from the UP. How they will be missed! A large Canada Goose flight was noted in the central UP on September 19th, with over a 1000 birds recorded in both the Marquette and Escanaba areas.

Marquette County
David Pavlik had a SHORT-EARED OWL fly off Lake Superior at Presque Isle Park on September 18th. Scot Stewart had 5 SNOW GEESE fly over the Silver Creek Road Soccer Fields on September 19th. Scot also had a RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER at the same location on the 20th. 9 CACKLING GEESE were recorded in a waterbird count at Presque Isle Park on the 19th. A single CACKLING GOOSE was present on the 20th at the Shiras Pool at Presque Isle Park.
Delta County
Dee Miller had 337 migrating BROAD-WINGED HAWKS on 19th at the MSU Tree Research Farm.
Alger County
Louie Dombroski found a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE off the Grand Marias breakwall on September 14th. Also present was a FORSTER’S TERN. Louie also noted a flock of 37 CACKLING GEESE in Grand Marias on the 20th. Jean Carpenter found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER at the end of Laughing Whitefish Point Road on the 18th. A LE CONTE’S SPARROW was the highlight of a field trip to Grand Island on September 16th. Jude Halloway had 5 SPRUCE GROUSE on September 9th off of Forest Highway 13.
Schoolcraft County
While conducting a Hawk Watch in Manistique, Ron Annelin had an immature GOLDEN EAGLE on September 19th.
Chippewa County
Tom Auer found a basic plumaged RED PHALAROPE at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory on September 20th. Other good birds from Whitefish in the last week include BLACK & SURF SCOTER on the 20th, 3 CACKLING GEESE on the 19th, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on the 18th, 2 FORSTER’S TERNS on the 17th, YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO on the 16th, and single CONNETICUT WARBLERS on the 14th and 17th. The Jaeger season continues to be a strong one at WPBO, with unidentified JAEGER SPECIES sighted on the 20th, 19th, 17th, 15th with 2 on the 14th.
