Steve Santner and I had a fantastic weekend of birding in the U.P. In
addition to seeing the Vermilion flycatcher and the Green-tailed towhee, we had the
extraordinarily good fortune to find out about the Ancient murrelet just as
we started heading south from Seney heading for home. We reversed course and
raced straight for the Tahquamenon River mouth, where we got breathtaking
looks at this beautiful and very obliging bird. I posted a photo of this bird on
the birders at umich photo sharing site:

>From the sublime to the less unusual U.P. birds, we also had the following:
Ruddy duck: 1 on 10/28 in Marquette just north of where 28/41 turns west
Pine grosbeaks: 5 on 10/29 in Marquette County near the town of Mangum
Northern shrike: 1 on 10/29 in Marquette County on Greenmead Road just east
of 41
Merlin: 1 on 10/29 in Alger County on 28 just west of H13 and 1 on 10/29 in
Schoolcraft County along 454 just north of 28
Snow buntings: all over
