This is the rare bird alert sponsored by the Detroit Audubon Society.
Marquette County is birding central for the state even if far from the
geographic center. The mega-bird there is VERMILION FLYCATCHER (not an
adult male) from October 11 to at least October 26th at Big Bay, near
the shores of Lake Superior NW of the city of Marquette. Take County
Road 550 25 miles NW of Marquette to the village of Big Bay. Go to
north end of town and make a right onto Schenk. Go down Schenk passed
the Bay Cliff Health Club. The road will curve around to the right and
become the KBC Road. Stay on the paved road all the way to the gray
house frequented by the flycatcher. There will be a 3rd sign for the
lighthouse going down a dirt road about 2 miles down on the KBC Road.
Stay to the right on the KBC/KD road and go .7 miles down to the gray
house on the left.

In Marquette itself there has been a GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE at least
through October 24th. It is in the yard of Louie Taccolini at 719 W.
Ridge Street in Marquette where it was first found around October 13th.

Point Edward is well known for a lake watch location at the south end of
Lake Huron. What is less well known is that the southern rim of Lake
Huron can also be excellent for hawks. Blake Manns on October 24th had
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, MERLIN and PEREGRINE from the parking
lot overlooking Lake Huron at Point Edward. He also had all three
species of SCOTERS there and 3 LONG-TAILED DUCK. Further up the Lake
Huron shoreline in Ontario, a BRANT was seen at Kettle Point on October
26th.

On the west side of the state, Rick Brigham had fly-by SABINE'S GULL at
Douglas in Ottawa County on Lake Michigan on October 22nd.

NORTHERN SHRIKES are starting to appear in the lower peninsula. Joe
Soehnel had one in Bay County on October 26th. Jack Reinoehl had 6
SHORT-EARED OWLS in Hillsdale County at a traditional location on Tripp
Road at Burt Road on October 25th. He says this is the first year since
2001 when that species has occurred in good numbers in Hillsdale County.
Mike Mencoitti had some PINE SISKINS at the Novi waste water treatment
facility on October 21st.

As for late records, Dave Peters had a late INDIGO BUNTING at Shiawassee
Refuge on October 22nd. Betsy Yee-Diamond and Joe Mamau had a PARULA on
October 19th at Hart Plaza in downtown Detroit and an OVENBIRD was still
in downtown Detroit today at Campus Martius. Mike Mencotti had a
SOLITARY SANDPIPER at American Center Marsh in Southfield, Oakland
County on October 22nd.

On October 29, 2006 (Sunday) there will be a field trip to observe
cranes at the Haehnle Sanctuary on Seymour Road at 2:30 for a hike and 4
p.m. to observe cranes from the hill overlooking the marsh.

On November 4, 2006 there will be a field trip lead by Karl Overman from
Point Edward and up the Lake Huron shoreline in Ontario. Meet at 8 am
at the Ontario tourist information center in Sarnia (take exit one once
you have cross the Blue Water Bridge).

To report rare birds call Karl Overman at 248.473.0484.
