UP Rare Bird Report for October 19, 2006
The UP saw a serious snowfall over the weekend with several inches accumulation over most of the Lake Superior watershed. A new “winter” bird was recorded in the last week as well, with COMMON REDPOLLS putting in an appearance at WPBO & the Keweenaw Peninsula. Still no Pine Grosbeaks yet, but PINE SISKINS are quite abundant with smaller numbers of RED CROSSBILLS around. A few shorebirds are still hanging on with reports of lingering GREATER YELLOWLEGS, DUNLIN & PECTORAL SANDPIPER this week.

Keweenaw County
A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER continues to be seen in Copper Harbor through October 15th. Zach Gayk reported a HARRIS’S SPARROW in Westcott Fields on the 14th-15th.
Houghton/Baraga County
Joe Youngman reported 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS along with 3 additional Asio Owls (Short-eared/Long-eared), at the Arnheim Unit of the Sturgeon River Sloughs on Oct 15th.
Marquette County
A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE has been seen daily at the feeders of Louie Taccolini in the City of Marquette since October 13th, and seen all day on the 19th. Louie can be reached at ltaccoli at nmu.edu for updates on the bird. Also present at Louie’s has been a HARRIS’S SPARROW seen through today. Scot Stewart had 2 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Marquette on the 15th. A flock of 5 SURF SCOTERS were in the Upper Harbor on the 14th. Alan Rebertus had a SHORT-EARED OWL at his home in Big Bay on the 15th. Also on the 15th, a TUNDRA/TRUMPETER SWAN was seen by Steve Connolly & James Skelton at the Forestville Basin. A BOREAL CHICKADEE and 2 GREY JAYS were seen in the Wolf Lake area on the 16th. A handful of CACKLING GEESE remain along the Marquette waterfront in the last week. 4 BLACK SCOTERS have been in the Lower Harbor through the 19th.
Delta County
Dee Miller had 2 GREY JAYS along US-41 north of Rapid River on the 14th. Ryne Rutherford had 7 CACKLING GEESE on the 14th, and 5 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS on the 15th at Peninsula Point.
Alger County
Amanda Ingraham found a ROCK WREN at Sand Point north of Munising on October 15th. The bird was seen by the old Coast Guard Boathouse, just before the Headquarter Building for Pictured Rocks Nat. Lakeshore. 2 ROSS’S-type GEESE (probable Ross’s/Snow Goose hybrids) were in a flock of 30 CACKLING GEESE at Munising High School’s practice field on the 13th. Greg Cleary & Jude Holloway had 3 RUDDY DUCKS at the Shingleton Sewage Ponds on the 15th.
Luce County
A GREY JAY was present along M-123, one mile east of Skyline Road on the 15th.
Chippewa County
Whitefish Point Bird Observatory continues to tally in the jaegers, with a juvenile POMARINE JAEGER being seen on October 14th. Other notable sightings this week include 1 PARASITIC JAEGER, 1 unidentified JAEGER SPECIES and 4 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 17th; 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS, 2 unidentified JAEGER SPECIES and 13 NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS on the 16th; 1 juvenile SABINE’S GULL, 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS, 1 unidentified JAEGER SPECIES and 2-4 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS on the 15th; 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS and 2 unidentified JAEGER SPECIES on the 14th; 1 FORSTER’S TERN, 1 PARASITIC JAEGER and 4 unidentified JAEGERS on the 13th. BLACK SCOTERS and RED-THROATED LOONS have been seen on a near daily basis as well this week.
