Hi Birders,
It was a great day for birding (in my backyard). The BIG ONE came in
about 4:30 P.M. (sounds like a U.P. deer story).....a
Green-tailed towhee. What a surprise....and no doubt about it....all of
the characteristics seen easily. My wife and I both saw it, and I called
Skye Haas and Ray Sischo...Skye was in Munising but I heard his car screech
as he turned it around to come here. When it was all over the bird kept
disappearing and reappearing. Ray saw it, David Pavlik (Skye had
telephoned him) came and saw it, and then Skye came (it seemed I had only
taken three or four blinks of my eyes after I had called him but I will take
his word that he drove slowly). Skye saw it, along with Max Henschell, Greg
Cleary and Scot Stewart. It was nice being in the same company with all of
those great birders. Skye says it is a first for Marquette county, and
perhaps the 6th or 7th for the state. Were we happy.......YES! Skye thinks
it may stay around for several days....birders are welcome..... 719 W. Ridge
St, Marquette.....without guarantees it will be here. The Harris sparrow
in the yard at the same time didn't create too much excitement. Early in
the day I had 7 Hermit thrushes, five at one time, tons of house sparrows
and others.....all very skittish as though they know that winter is coming.
It was a great Friday the 13th. Good birding! Louie Taccolini
