Listers,

Mid-day on Sunday I found a LONG-EARED OWL at the Harris Nature Center/Meridian Riverfront Park along the White Pines Trail near the front part of the stand of pines that the trail winds through. I noticed the owl when it flushed and disappeared further into the stand. These are by far the tallest pines that I have personally seen a LEOW in. Lots of traffic on the trails so I didn't pursue it in hopes it'll stay. The Harris Nature Center/Meridian Riverfront Park is located along the river on Van Atta north of Jolly Road near Okemos.

Earlier in the day I saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE just south of I-96 on College Road. This spot is just south of the College Ponds near the I-96/US-127 junction.

As a side note, I went down to Hillsdale County to see the previously reported SHORT-EARED OWLS on Tripp Road north of Burt and ended my personal streak of 3 misses in a row! At least 3 Owls were visible around 5:15 pm after at least 3 Northern Harriers (1 adult male & 2 juv) had been hunting the field since about 5 till 5. The SHORT-EAREDs were a quarter mile or so north of Burt on the west side of Tripp and were hunting in front of the wooded area to the north of the wooden frame (it'll make sense when you see it).

Good Birding,

Scott Jennex
Ferndale
