UP Rare Bird Report for November 25, 2006
I take it all back about the onslaught of winter. In my defense, October was pretty snowy, but the UP has been subject to extremely mild (and pleasant!) temperatures this last week. If this weather continues a little longer, some record late dates for fall migrants may be set this year. Get out and find those lingering warblers!
Highlights
WESTERN GREBE
AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER
VERMILION FLYCATCHER
GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE
Mute Swan
Black-backed Woodpecker
Townsend’s Solitaire
Boreal Chickadee
Common Yellowthroat
Le Conte’s Sparrow
Hoary Redpoll
Keweenaw County
Joe Youngman & Zach Gayk had 2 AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKERS on November 25th. Joe originally found 1 female AMERICAN THREE-TOED WOODPECKER on the 23rd, and today they refound the bird with a second bird. Also present were 3 female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS and a BOHEMIAN WAXWING. These birds are in the wilds of southern Keweenaw Point in a burn area. This is an extremely remote area accessible only by foot. Joe does not recommend chasing this bird due to the rough country. The extremely adventurous types can contact Joe at ferrug at pasty.com for directions. Joe Kaplan & Louie Dombroski had 1-2 TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRES in Copper Harbor on the 19th. 1 was in the Westcott Fields and another (possible the same bird) at the corner of Bernard and 3rd.
Houghton County
Locally rare, a MUTE SWAN was at the Calumet Sewage Ponds on the 19th. Very late for the area was a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW north of Calumet on the 17th.
Baraga County
The WESTERN GREBE was present at the head of the Keweenaw Bay most recently as the 19th. A second AECHMORPHUS GREBE was seen on the 18th, though efforts to refind it have been unsuccessful.
Marquette County
The VERMILION FLYCATCHER was still present as of the 24th. The GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was still present as of the 24th as well. Ryne Rutherford reported 2 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS, a female on the 20th, and a male on the 21st, as well as BOREAL CHICKADEES, and RED & WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS in the McCormick Track. Also reported from the McCormick was a HOARY REDPOLL and GRAY JAYS on the 19th. Notable inland was a LONG-TAILED DUCK on Lake Michigamme in Van Riper State Park on the 19th. A GRAY JAY was seen along M-41 2 miles south of M-94 in Skandia on the 20th. A 1st winter GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL was at the mouth of the Dead River on the 23rd. A BOREAL CHICKADEE, 4 GRAY JAYS and 30+ WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were along the Clowry Truck Trail on the 24th.
Delta County

Alger County
Scott Hickman found a TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE on the road for the DNR Boat Launch for Deer Lake. The bird was by a small pond, just off of M-28. Mark & Joan Hubinger reported a late LE CONTE’S SPARROW and 20 RED CROSSBILLS on a 2-track west of Au Train on the 21st. Jude Holloway reported 13 TRUMPETER SWANS on Doe Lake on the 25th.
