Louie Dombroski and I observed 1 maybe 2 Townsend's Solitaires today in
Copper Harbor (Keweenaw County) -- the first was in Westcoat's Field (access
from Grandpa's Barn book shop -- then go east towards Lake Fanny Hoe)
feeding on juniper berries east of the pond on the north side of the field
between the blue sign and the fire hall. About an hour later we saw another
one (or the same) in the dense brush at the corner of Benard and Third
Street. We also observed a male Northern Cardinal near the Harbor Haus and
west along the shoreline
South of Calumet along Hwy 203 at the Calumet Sewage Ponds (Houghton Co.) we
confirmed a Mute Swan which was reported to us by the manager Ken and has
been present for at least a few days. Be advise that it can fly away and
this happen while we were watching it -- maybe out to Lake Superior (try the
Waterworks Park).

ANNOUNCING A NEW MICHIGAN BIRD BOOK
The first major book on the birds of Michigan in 10 years has just been
published. BIRDS OF THE KEWEENAW PENINSULA, a distribution monograph by
ornithologist Laurence C. Binford, a long-time resident of Keweenaw County
treats all 326 bird species recorded in Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw Cos.
Introductory chapters briefly outline physiography, geology, climate,
ornithological history, and data sources. A through methods section that
systematizes and clearly defines modes of occurrence (e.g. summer resident,
vagrant, visitant), detectability (11 categorizes), seasonality, and annual
regularity is offered as an all-inclusive model for authors writing similar
works. Each species account details current and former status (mode of
occurrence, seasonality, and detectability), local range, habitat, extreme
and median migration dates, seasonal high counts, breeding data (178
species), banding recoveries, all known records for rarities, historical
population changes, and statistical summaries of Breeding Bird Surveys,
North American Migration Counts, and Christmas Bird Counts. A separate
hypothetical list treats 22 unaccepted species. Each listed record includes
at least date, locality, number of individual birds, and observers. Most
data are from the field notes of the author and several local experts, which
together comprise over 86 person-years of observation since 1972. Other
records are from the literature and over 270 named observers, including some
190 recent visitors and local residents; the literature cited section
contains 140 entries. Seventeen discussion chapters treat various aspects
of Keweenaw ornithology, including biogeography, irruptions, raptor
migration, waterbird migration on Lake Superior, shorebird migration,
importance of sewage ponds for breeding waterfowl, effects of the
environment on the wintering avifauna, Christmas Bird Counts, bird feeders,
historical changes, conservation, and a unique summary of vagrancy.
