The WESTERN GREBE on Torch Lake in Hubell was still present as of November 11th. The grebe is visible from the DNR boat launch. Also lingering from last week was the adult ROSS’S GOOSE at the mouth of the Pilgrim River. The goose was last reported on the 10th, and is with a flock of SNOW GEESE. It is thought the Ross’s Goose may be part of a family group with a Snow Goose and 3 possible hybrid young.

Baraga County
Joe Youngman reports that the WESTERN GREBE in Baraga was seen again at the head of the Keweenaw Bay on the 10th. A Laughing Whitefish Audubon Society field trip to the Peshekee Grade on the 11th turned up 2 HOARY REDPOLLS, 1 female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER, 7 GRAY JAYS and both RED & WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS.

Marquette County
The VERMILION FLYCATCHER in Big Bay has now been present for over a month, and was most recently seen on the 15th. Also still present is the GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE in the City of Marquette. At this point, one has to wonder if the Towhee is going to attempt to over-winter. 7 BOREAL CHICKADEES, 3 GRAY JAYS and several WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were found on the Peshekee Grade on the 10th. The HARRIS’S SPARROW at the MooseWood Nature Center was last seen on the 10th. Gulling in the City of Marquette this week turned up an adult GLAUCOUS GULL on the 10th and a 1st winter GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL on the 12 & 15th. A CACKLING GOOSE and 2 BLACK SCOTERS were in the Lower Harbor on the 14th.

Alger County
Scott Hickman found a RED-THROATED LOON and 2 1st winter GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS in Munising Bay on the 15th. Also in Munising was a 1st winter GLAUCOUS GULL on the 12th. A very late ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was at the feeders of Kathy Sendak in Kiva on the 11-12th.

Chippewa County
Whitefish Point Bird Observatory finished its fall season on November 15th. The last week certainly ended with a bang with several notable species being seen. The pair of WHITE-WINGED DOVES were seen on the 12th, with one bird staying to the 14th. 1 adult winter LITTLE GULL, 2 1st winter ICELAND GULLS and a 1st winter GLAUCOUS GULL were all seen on the 12th. Constituting a 4th WPBO record was a PURPLE SANDPIPER briefly seen on the point on the 13th. Finally an AMERICAN COOT was in the Harbor of Refuge was present from the 12-14th. Thanks must go to Tom Auer for keeping us all updated through another exciting season at Whitefish Point.
Kirk Zulfelt reported 5 ICELAND GULLS, 1 THAYER’S GULL and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at the Dafter Dump on November 13th.
