RFI Thanksgiving birding around Traverse City

Hello,

Longtime subscriber, but first time poster.  I am a Michigan native who has been living in San Diego the last three years.  I will be returning home for Thanksgiving this year, and will be in Traverse City for most of that week.  While there I would like to take in some more local birding, but would rather not travel more than 2-3 hours from TC.  Can anyone give me suggestions on some good relatively local birding spots?  I was considering driving down to Muskegon one day, since Short-eared Owl and Purple Sandpiper would be lifers for me.  Rare or uncommon gulls or longspurs would also be nice.

Any suggestions, info, or help would be most appreciated.  Please reply offlist if you think it is appropriate
