Birders,
Zach Gayk left messages on a number of voicemails with directions to a
BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE that he found today during the Eagle Harbor CBC off the
Little Gratiot River, near Lac La Belle. He left a message on my phone at
3:30ish, so we're not sure of when the bird was first or last seen.
Important to note is that this bird was seen feeding on deer ribs.
DIRECTIONS: North on US-41, take the Lac La Belle road (well marked)
southeast from Delaware into Lac La Belle (the town). Bear right at the
intersection at the bottom of Mt. Bohemia, heading towards Betsy and Gay.
This road follows around Lac La Belle (the lake). Heading southeast, when
you cross the Little Gratiot River Bridge, after a small park, a small road
(seen on Delorme) will turn off on the right. Take this and follow it a
short distance to where a powerline crosses the road. You'll be in some
boreal habitat and a deer carcass should be here where the bird was seen.
NOTE: these directions have not been confirmed and are constructed from
Zach's details. Updates and any direction revisions will be posted tomorrow.
An AECHMORPHUS SP was found by Joe Kaplan on the Eagle Harbor CBC in Copper
Harbor. The bird was seen far out from access points on the south side of
the harbor, but the Hunter's Point trail (which leaves from the Copper
Harbor Marina) will allow closer viewing tomorrow, when I follow up on this
bird.
Good Luck!
