A male Black-backed Woodpecker was seen again today at about 12:45 PM. The
bird was very cooperative, feeding in the same pine for at least 20 minutes
when I finally left. Another possible BB Woodpecker was heard while I was
trying to photograph this one but I never did find it in my bins.
Directions: The area is SW of Mio. From M-33, Take Valley Rd (CR 488). west
approx. 8.0 miles. Past Jenkins Rd. and just before the bridge crossing the
West Branch of the Big Creek, take a two-track that runs NW and parallels
the creek. One can drive in on the two-track for about 200-300 yards. At that
point the two-track is blocked off and there is a yellow sign that says
something like "Research Resource Project." From this sign I walked further
along the trail at a moderate pace for 20 minutes to the area where the bird was
located. I laid four sticks perpendicular to and across the trail at this
point but any snow will probably cover these. The bird was feeding in a pine
up the slope about 50 yards to the right (Northeast). Be forewarned that
there are a number of 'white-backed' woodpeckers in the area.
Regards,
