Birders,
First, the bird was last seen around 1:00 PM. Multiple attempts in the
afternoon were unable to relocate the bird, which had been tame and hadn't
moved far during the time it was watched. The bird was first seen around
10:30 a.m. in downtown L'Anse (directions below). It was spotted on a small
roof behind a large building. It proceeded to tamely feed underneath a car
and in near by sparse grasses. The last observer experienced difficulty in
finding it, due to the fact that it was hiding in an alcove entrance to the
building and as reported by others even spent as much as 20 minutes hiding
under the porch associated with the alcove. When flushed from these
locations, the bird never wandered far and was reportedly quite tame. Some
observers threw out seed in the general area in hopes of keeping it there.
Again, I personally made four different attempts to find it after 1:30 and
was never successful.
DIRECTIONS: Northbound to L'Anse on US41. Head towards downtown L'Anse, take
E Broad Street into the downtown section. When you reach the blinking red
light at the intersection of E Broad Street and N Main Street, take a right
and go about half of a block. The location is in the back of a large gray
building with the store "The Mind's Eye" in the front. Park on the street
and walk back behind the building. There is a sheltered alcove here, with
possibly a gold Chrysler car parked in the back. This was where the bird was
seen, on the ground and even tucked back in the corners of the cove. There
will be a creek to the southwest of the building and a VFW between the
building and the lake.
Updates will be posted if they are received.
Good Luck!
