This morning (Aug. 21) I parked at the Mouillee Creek lot at Pte.
Mouillee and walked out to the north end of Cell 3, hoping that on
the way out I would see the 2 Cattle Egrets reported yesterday on the
middle dike and then see the Buff-breasted Sandpiper reported
yesterday in Cell 3. The Cattle Egrets were not there, and when I
reached Cell 3 at 10:45 the Buff-breasted Sandpiper wasn't around
either, although Jerry Jourdan had seen it very early this morning.
On the way back to the car, at about 11:30, I found the Cattle
Egrets, probably about where they were seen yesterday. Today they
were on the middle dike between Long Pond and the Lead Unit, about
100 yards west of the end of the dike that separates Long Pond and
the Vermet Unit. After a few minutes they flew out over the Lead
Unit and lit in plain view on a muskrat house, where they soon
hunkered down and looked as if they intended to stay awhile.
On the way home I stopped at the Waltz Sod Farm where, at about 1:15
pm , I saw a Buff-breasted Sandpiper. It was moving around a lot. I
first saw it in the field just to the west of the railroad track and
north of Ash Street. A little later it moved well to the west to the
field just east of the little creek and north of Ash Street. Ed
Smith saw it an hour or so later, and it was still moving around a lot.
