Listers,
At 5:00 pm today I had a 1st winter Black-legged Kittiwake flyby at Union
Pier in Berrien County. It was classic Kittiwake with the big M, dark collar,
tail stripe and bouncy flight. It was joined by a lone adult Bonaparte's Gull.
The birds were flying south along the Lake Michigan shoreline and were out of
sight within about a minute. The overlook at Union Pier is accessible from
Lakeshore Drive north off Red Arrow Highway just north of New Buffalo. Hopefully
the bird will join up with the large gull population around New Buffalo/Three
Oaks.
Good Birding,
Scott Jennex
