A White Pelican was at Crosswinds Marsh in southwest Wayne County shortly
before 3pm Thursday June 9. The bird was sitting in the midst of a flock of
gulls towards the southwest of the main pond complex. The location is quite
close to where a pair of Bald Eagles is nesting. Good viewing of this spot
of the wetlands can be reached from the parking lot by taking the boardwalk
that passes onto a small island.
Crosswinds Marsh which is a Wayne county park is a few miles west of
Interstate 275. It is bounded on the south by Oakville-Waltz road and
Haggerty Road on the east. Access to the parking lot is also off of Haggerty
Road.
If you are coming from west of Wayne County you might stop off at Willow Run
Airport and see Upland Sandpiper trying to nest there. Take Tyler Road east
as it winds its way through the Airport property. This morning an Upland
Sandpiper was sitting atop the fence along the road in the southeast section
of the Airport. At least one Grasshopper Sparrow was singing among numerous
Savannah Sparrows, Eastern Meadowlarks and a few Bobolinks.
