This is the Michigan Statewide Bird Report for Thursday, June 9th 2005. It
is sponsored by Wild Bird Outfitters, located on Wilson Avenue in
Grandville.

In CHIPPEWA COUNTY, at the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory on June 3rd, Ken
Mettie located a female KING EIDER* off the tip of Whitefish Point. It had
been seen at times near the harbor at Whitefish Point, and farther out
offshore. I am unaware of any relocation after June 3rd.

In BERRIEN COUNTY, the previously reported CHUCK-WILL’S-WIDOW* continues to
be heard along True Road, just west of M-140, and along Jones Road, between
True Road (north) and Long Lake Road (south). I heard the bird at about 5am
on June 5th, on Jones Road, ¼ mile north of Long Lake Road. Most recent
report was on evening of June 8th. The previously reported EURASIAN COLLARD
DOVES* remained this week at the Three Oaks Village Park, at the corner of
Elm Street and US-12. Up to 7 singing male PRAIRIE WARBLERS were observed on
June 6th by Macklin Smith, at Warren Dunes State Park. Most were heard along
the dune blowouts between the end of the Blue Jay Trail, south to the large
parking areas. Brad Anderson reports a singing male BLACK-THROATED BLUE
WARBLER, apparently on territory well south of its usual range, in the
wooded dunes in a remote area of Warren Dunes State Park. Despite the hay
being mowed, 2-3 DICKCISSELS were observed along Mill Road, just south of
Elm Valley Road, on June 6th (Macklin Smith). On June 5th, Dave Vinnedge and
I located a male ORCHARD ORIOLE at the entrance to Sarett Nature Center’s
prairie restoration area, located about 1/3 of a mile south of the nature
center entrance on the Westside of Benton Center Road. At least 1
CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was present back in the prairie area, beneath the power
lines. Forest Lawn Road near Three Oaks have had reports of the following
this week: NORTHERN PARULA, YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, CERULEAN WARBLER,
HOODED WARBLER. A WHITE-EYED VIREO continues to be heard at the closed
bridge on Lakeside Road, just north of Forest Lawn Road.

In WASHTENAW COUNTY, on June 8th, a BLUE GROSBEAK* was observed at the
Sharon Valley State Game Area. June 5th, Jacco Gelderoos found a SNOWY EGRET
at the Schneider Road Pond, located along Schneider Road, just north of
Pleasant Lake Road. Additionally, Jaccos reported a DICKCISSEL, in a field
on the north side of Braun Road opposite the house #10477. The location is
about 1 mile east of Lima Center Road. Also on June 5th, Mike Sefton found
a group of WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, located at the Avis Farms office complex
on Ann Arbor's south side. The complex is on the west side of State Road,
south of Ellsworth Road. The pond in question is in the western section of
the complex. On the morning of June 7th, a juvenile LITTLE BLUE HERON was
reported by Michael Kielb, at the main pond on the grounds of Washtenaw
Community College. The pond is accessed from Huron River Drive, just east of
Dixboro (major construction site). Enter the FIRST road east of Dixboro,
proceed south until the road makes a sharp curve to the LEFT. The pond will
be on your right. (Thanks to Michael Kielb for directions.) On June 5th,
John McDaniel found a pair of ORCHARD ORIOLES, located between Merrit Road
and Bemis Road, north of Whimbrel Court.

In IOSCO COUNTY, June 4th, Tom Tucholski found 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS,
and a very rare late spring BAIRD’S SANDPIPER on the lake side sandbar at
the end of Tawas Point (Tawas Point State Park).

In BAY COUNTY at Nayanquing Point State Game Area on June 5th, Pat Baize
reported the resident YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS.

In SAGINAW COUNTY at Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge on June 4th, Pat
Baize heard 3 singing PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS.

In SAINT CLAIR COUNTY on June 4th, Neil Gilbert birded the Port Huron State
Game Area. Both CERULEAN WARBLERS and HOODED WARBLERS were among his species
list.

In MUSKEGON COUNTY, at the Muskegon Wastewater Facility on June 3rd, Tex
Wells and Glen Belyea relocated 1 WILSON’S PHALAROPE and 2 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES, which were in the far western small cell. On June 6th, Charlie
Dewitt photographed 2 WILSON’S PHALAROPES at Muskegon Wastewater.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, June 16th,
2005. To report your sightings, please leave a message at the sound of the
tone or call Jon Wuepper at 269-556-9510. Thanks for calling and good
