As of 11:30 Monday morning the Curlew Sandpiper has not been relocated at
the Lakewood Wastewater Ponds, despite the 20 or so people that have been
looking since the gates opened at 7:00 A.M. There have been almost 100
people so far visiting the facility looking for the bird. I spoke to the
staff to see how if everyone has been behaving at the facilities. They
told me that 99% have been real good at obeying the rules. They did have
an issue with having to chase a couple of guys out one night when they
wanted to close the gate. These same people also put on boots and went
out into the field through the raw sewage that is being discharged.
There also was an incident with people not moving for the tractors and
trucks that need to use the same dike that the bird is being viewed from.
Remember that the staff at the Lakewood Ponds does not have to let
anyone in there so obey the rules and be out by 3:00 P.M. so they don't
have to come and get you. Also do not go into the fields and stay out of
the way of the people working there. If this isn't done the access here
may be eliminated. Thanks.
