Birders,
This morning Nancy and I checked Cell 2 at Pte. Mouillee for the previously
reported Glossy Ibises and King Rail, without any luck. A breeding-plumaged
American Avocet was there as a consolation prize, along with many other
shorebirds (see list below). Also, after walking clockwise around Cell 2, we
saw a Prothonotary Warbler near the northeast corner of Cell 1 in the low
shrubs along the dike between Cells 1 and 2, near the east end of the pond.
And, on the way back, about half way along the inner causeway of the banana
between the South Causeway and the cross dike between Cells 1 and 2, another
Prothonotary Warbler was singing. It seems likely they're attempting to
breed in Cell 1. A Yellow-billed Cuckoo was also heard singing from inside
Cell 1.
Other shorebirds in Cell 2 this morning included:
Killdeer - 40+
Spotted Sandpiper - 3 (outside of the banana along Cell 2)
Greater Yellowlegs - 49
Lesser Yellowlegs - 87
Short-billed Dowitcher - 114+
Least Sandpiper - 125+
Semipalmated Sandpiper - 3
Stilt Sandpiper - 1 (breeding plumage)
