This morning while birding the Lakewood Wastewater Ponds I had 6 Cackling Geese in with the couple hundred Canada Geese that were present. Most of the geese this morning were near the back ponds. They were both in the ponds and the dikes. Five of the Cackling Geese were together in one of the geese flocks and one that was in a different group of birds. With this new split this summer I am sure there will be a lot more of these reported this fall once we really get into goose migration. I know there have already been at least 20 that have been reported a Whitefish Point, a couple of flocks by Vermillion Point, several from Ontario, New York, and Chicago. I found this website to be helpfull with identification of the various subspecies and with information on the Cackling Goose, http://www.utahbirds.org/RecCom/NewGoose.htm. Lakewood Wastewater is located in southwest Ionia county on Harwood road between Musgrove Hwy. and Tupper lake Rd. The gates are open Monday thru Friday from 8:00 to 3:00. You do need to sign in at the office.
