I picked up the following message on the BBC listserv (Berrien County) this
morning Sep 5, but didn't see it on mich-listers yet. I'm going to
Saugatuck this afternoon to search for the bird, and I will update
mich-listers tonight whether I find it or not.

Good Birding,
Caleb Putnam

>As of 9:00 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 4, the Brown Pelican was observed at
>Saugatuck, MI. It is no longer out at Lake Michigan, however, but was
>observed twice
>by a credible witness flying in Saugatuck Bay in the town of Saugatuck. It
>is west of the Blue Star Hiway bridge over the bay, but well east of Lake
>Michigan. The previous sighting for the pelican was on the beach north of
>the Kalamazoo River empties into Lake Michigan, seen four days earlier
>31). The theory is that it must have followed the channel of the Kalamazoo
>upstream and entered the harbor.
>Walter Booth, Thelma Gilbert, and I spent about 3 hours late Sat. afternoon
>searching for the pelican. We first went to Saugatuck State Park where it
>been seen previously, but no luck. While in the State Park we bumped into
>some hikers who have a condo on Saugatuck Harbor. They reported seeing the
>pelican twice on Saturday morning, flying about. They had a good look at
>it, so
>seem to be credible witnesses. We then checked most of the channel of the
>Kalamazoo River, and also Oval Beach. Perhaps at the time of our search
>Pelican had gone EAST of the I-94 bridge over the River. We had no time to
>out that area.
>Of interest were the Pileated Woodpecker heard at Saugatuck State Park and
>the Wild Turkey with young seen in the meadow there. Also saw seven D.-C.
>Cormorants flying over Saugatuck Harbor.
>Warren Johns
