Birders,
On Tuesday, Oct. 5th I birded Wilderness State Park and saw
the following:
(43) HORNED GREBES
(7) RED-NECKED GREBES
(2) RED-THROATED LOONS
(22) Great-crested Cormorants
(1) Common Loon - dead, washed ashore (poor bird...)
(1) Imm. Bald Eagle
(1) Northern Harrier
(1) Sharp-shinned Hawk
(1) Horned Lark
(1) Swamp Sparrow
I also saw (7) GOLDEN PLOVERS and (2) BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS.
The birds were gracious enough to give me a great backdrop for
photographing as several of them scooted up onto the rocks affording
me great looks at their plumage:
Golden Plovers:
- plump body w/ small head and small bill
- darker cap relative to the Black-bellied Plover
- gray breast/underparts w/ white spots/barring
- light armpits in flight
- darker tail/rump in flight
Black-bellied Plovers:
- larger head and larger bill rel. to the Golden
- lightly-streaked breast and white underparts
- dark armpits in flight
- white rump/tail in flight
I'll post pics as soon as I return south this weekend.
