This afternoon, 5/2, about 1:00 PM, a pair of Black-backed Woodpeckers were
observed at the Shelldrake Campground, behind campsite # 16. Shelldrake
Campground is reached by going roughly NW on Vermillion Rd. for 1.2 miles from
Whitefish Pt. Rd. The hard-topped portion of Vermillion Rd. ends at this point.
Take the left fork that will lead into the campground. The road from Verillion
Rd. into the campground is now marked only by a small sign that says "Dam".
Although no active mating or nesting activity was noted, both birds were
feeding on dead pines in close proximity to each other and nesting in this location
is possible. It is currently quite wet in this area and trying to follow the
birds on foot is problematic.
