Glaucous Gulls in Wayne Co.

Birders,

Today I went in search of Northern Shrikes and gulls. I bombed out on the
shrike, and the previous gull hotspots of Edison Lake and the pond on Tyler
Road in Van Buren Twp. were completely empty today.

Near Crosswinds Marsh, I did find several hundred gulls loafing in a frozen
field about 1/2 mile south of the landfill (which is east of Crosswinds).
Most of the gulls remained over the landfill, but there seemed to be a
regular rotation of individuals. Among them were three Glaucous Gulls (2
first winter-1 darker one paler, 1 second winter). There were also
Red-tailed (6) and Rough-legged (1-light) Hawks in this area, which
occasionally flushed all the gulls, along with a dozen or so Horned Larks.

>From Haggerty Road, take Oakville Waltz east about 1/2 mile to Carleton West
Road (the first road on the right). Turn right and go about 1/2 mile to
Newburg Road and turn left. The birds were on the north (left) side of the
road.

Another Rough-legged Hawk (dark) was at Willow Run Airport today also.
