Dear Mich-listers,
This morning I've surprised by a juvenile-plumaged Red-headed Woodpecker visiting our various suet feeders. The brown head feathers are beginning to turn crimson, and the white wing-patches and breast are streaked with brown. The bird tried valiantly to fight off a Pileated Woodpecker, but was forced off the suet by the larger bird. This is only the second Red-headed Woodpecker I've seen in the winter in Emmet County. Happy holidays!
