Having missed the ferry to Neebish Island, I went to Sugar Island with its more frequent ferries. I found 2 Great Gray Owls on east 7 Mile Rd. The 1st was 1 mile in, by a gated drive with a rock monument and baby blue pickup in the drive. The 2nd was at 1.5 miles in a large scrubby wetland area. Both birds were skittish and flew into thicker cover soon after I stopped the car.
A 3rd owl was seen on the mainland on Hwy 48 south, about .25 miles north of Goetzville. There was a repair shop across the road, maybe called Frankies?. A dark Rough-leg was at Riverside and 13 mile. Pine Grosbeaks and C. Redpolls were seen on Sugar Island. I never did get to Neebish or the Rudyard area. Steve Baker
