I’ve finally gotten the time over the frozen days/months of winter to
update the Saginaw Bay Area Birding website’s Photo Gallery. Over one
hundred plus quality photos have been submitted by area birders over
the past year and I sincerely appreciate all photographers who have
been willing to share them with the site. These photos should be a
good diversion from the last of winter’s grip for birders before
spring migration begins and our passion/wonder of nature resumes.
Rare birds in this round of photos include: Purple Gallinule that
graced Tuttle Marsh last May; Eurasian Wigeon at Tobico Marsh in
October; Cave Swallow that was found dead in Bridgeport in early
November, and the Common Ground Dove at Tawas Point.
Several interesting pictorial sequences include: Wood Duck fledglings
photographed just as one jumped out of a nest box; Great Blue Heron
that swallowed a 20+ inch Northern Pike; first documented Bay County
Piping Plover nest/fledglings (location kept secret for obvious
reasons); successful Osprey nesting at Tuttle Marsh, and a Greater
Yellowlegs catching/eating minnows!
There are also birds photographed that were surprising finds for the
time of year including: Glaucous Gull in Kawkawlin Twp, Bay County on
May 19th; Blackburnian Warbler (nesting probable) at Arenac County
Park on July 4th, and White-throated Sparrow (nesting probable) at
Arenac County Park on July 9th.
Thanks again for photos submitted & enjoy!
