[Mich-chat] Yarn for Nesting Material?

Hi,

I work at a daycare and soon I'll be teaching a week long unit on birds.  One project I would like to do involves nesting materials for birds.  What I envision is having the kids cut up yarn, place into a mesh bag and then hang the bag in a tree.

I'm wondering how long the strings should be and is there any particular color that would work the best?  My goal is to have the kids look for nests to see if they can find their string.
