This from Jonathan Wuepper. I wondered too about this but the last time we were in these lek areas not that long ago the DNR still had signs posted "Sharp Tailed Grouse Area" (real OLD signs?) Perhaps I or others should be checking back on this?

Russ-

Would you mind posting this on Mich-chat for me please? I saw the discussion about Sharp-tailed Grouse in the Northern Lower Peninsula (I don't subscribe to Mich-chat).

I can't understand why range maps in recent bird books(say last ten years) still show the range of the Sharp-tailed Grouse in the NLP.

I have searched the Michigan Bird Surveys (in Mich BIrds & Jack-pine warbler) and found last records as:

Last reported date: 3 coveys on 26 July 1987 in southeast Kalkaska County; 13 on 26 April 1986 at Silver Lake, Missaukee; 9 on 9 April 1983, Missaukee County; Otsego co, spring 1981 & 1982.

Someone at US Forest Service in Mio says no recent reports of the species are known.
