John: Not seen at a Wildlife refuge but our oldest daughter and husband have had Wood Ducks use their nest boxes for several years at their place in NW St. Clair county (Capac area). They have witnessed the ducklings leave the box before and this year to ensure seeing the event they installed a mini video-cam in the box to monitor the progress.

Subject: Trip report Michigan late spring 2008
hello all,
based on the ABA birdfinding guide of Michigan (2004) we made a private birding trip to your lovely state late May/early June, and included a few sites in Ontario too. A report mainly consisting of photos of the birding sites can be found at
http://www.jvanderw.nl/tripreports/MichiganOntario2008/report.html
As the species list at the bottom of the report shows, 117 of the 168 species we saw are also included in the recent WP list (Western Palearctic; mainly Europe). Of these 117 species, 27 are regular species for the WP too, leaving 90 species which for us in Europe are American vagrants. Thrilling!
We finally saw many warblers in their breeding habitat (in stead of only on migration hotspots like Cape May and High Island, or in their wintering quarters). We also witnessed some of the last migration at your hotspots (Tawas, Whitefish Point). However, possibly the rarest thing we saw was the jumping out of their nest boxes of Wood Duck ducklings in Shiawassee NWR. We told this the warden after leaving the reserve, and he said that in all his years in reserves like this he had never witnessed this event. Did any of you?
