Last weekend we hiked with my son up the trail at Monocle Lake Campground east of Brimley in Chippewa County in the Upper Penninsula. At the top is an extensive view over the southern end of Whitefish Bay and the entrance to the Saint Marys River in Sault Ste. Marie. While we were there catching our breath for the next 20 minutes I saw Common Loons and a few ducks flying at fairly high altitude from Whitefish Bay towards the Soo. I have on occassion stopped at Iroquis Pt. Lighthous and have not seen much activity but now wonder if some birds that go by Whitefish Pt. fly more directly overland from the base of Whitefish Bay and head towards Lake Huron hence not being "funneled" through the area of the locks in Sault Ste. Marie. This are may be a good spot to watch during fall migration for both waterfowl and raptors.
This overlook is more easily accessible by car from West Lakeshore Drve to West Tower Rd. USFS 3151 just west of Brimley and take the road up the hill to the pull off view area (near Mission Cemetary).
