Folks -
Went Up North on a naturalist's day out yesterday. There were decent warbler
flocks in the Snow Bowl Rd. area near Houghton Lake, not so much elsewhere.
At least 2/3 of the chickadee flocks I pished in had no warblers. Grass River
NA in Antrim Co. was a very interesting place and worth other visits, as were
the Elk Rapids sewage ponds and the area around Norwood/the south end of
Fisherman's Island SP in south Charlevoix. Other than those places, birds were
bits and drabs.
Best bird was probably an American Golden Plover at the sewage ponds.
Merlins are always enjoyable and there was a young bird perched by the road near the
ponds. Nice long looks there. Also had good looks at a cheerfully singing
Blue-headed Vireo.
Given the weather, not many insects until later in the day. Best Odes were a
group of what I believe were Black Meadowhawk near Norwood and several
Saffron-winged Meadowhawks on the Beach at Fisherman's Island SP. Several darners
zooming by, no firm IDs.
Despite the driving, it was fairly relaxed and, as always, it was good to be
outside.
Take care. - Doug
