I had a time out in my "yard" (Ionia State Game Area) this morning and the last few mornings. On Thursday morning, I had nice views of a Canada Warbler and a Blackburnian down low and singing actively. They were competing with each other for my attention, making it very difficult to focus on either one for long. This morning, I had the Prothonotary Warbler that is nesting in the woods of the SGA as well as Mourning Warbler, Blue-winged, Magnolia and Northern Parula. The Yellow-breasted Chats aren't back yet (they showed up last year on May 27). Also had a Grey-cheeked Thrush this morning.
Last week I had an adult male Orchard Oriole in the SGA, and later, I had a first year male Orchard Oriole there. The highlight today though, was the Barred Owl chicks in a nest I discovered last week. Last year seemed to be the year of the Eagles (as I had a count of 475 eagle sightings for last year) and this year is the year of the Barred Owl (had some 15 sightings so far).
