Ross' Goose

Last Friday after a couple other tries, Will and I finally saw the Ross' Goose which has been hanging around the impoundment at Logan's Lansing and upstream at Northwest Community College. I'm sorry for this late report --overtaken by events.

To get to Logan's Landing, take 31 to Airport Rd, turn right and go a few miles to just a short way beyond Cass. It is a "sidewise" mall with two entrances, with the river dividing them. Take the second entrance (not the one with the traffic light) and drive to the back where the impoundment is. Check out the birds there. The Ross is not usually there, evidently, and if it isn't, go back to Airport Rd and turn right and take the next entrance. Drive to the back where a brick building is for sale. Walk around the right side of the building and check out what you see. You can also check out the other side of the building. If not there, go out to Airport again, turn right and take Cass north to the college, which is at your right.

Evidently the Traverse City Audubon group keeps sightings under their hats, so I don't know whether they've seen it recently.

We got to see it on the lawn of the building (4 PM) standing beside the impoundments with a much larger Canada Goose. Identifying marks all checked out, including the dark pink legs. I'm told, and have read, that it "usually" hangs out with Snow Geese. Unless someone reports one missing, am I right in thinking that doesn't mean this couldn't be an errant stray like other oddities. Or is it bred on lots of farms? Joan Wolfe.
