Birders,
Dave Stimac and I did some canoeing Saturday between Linden (Genesee Co) and Byron (Shiawassee Co)on the Shiawassee River on Saturday. I don't recommend this stretch of the river for a canoe trip.
We did encounter a suprisingly large cat-tail marsh near what is called Shiawassee Lake on the map. Here there were as many as 10 Marsh Wrens calling - the first breeding evidence I know of for Genesee Co. during the current breeding bird atlas and only the second time I've seen the species in the county. We also saw a juvenile Bald Eagle in this area - it would be intersting to know if it originated from this area. Most of the other birds encountered were what you would expect.
Things went downhill rapidly after that point and we had haul the canoe out to portage around downed trees approximately 20 times. We started at about 9:00 and finally reached Byron at 6:15.
