Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge is hosting a guided birding auto tour
on Friday, July 25, 2008. Refuge volunteer and Saginaw Valley Audubon
Society member Steve Gasser will lead the tour. Participants are asked to
meet at the refuge headquarters, 6975 Mower Road (corner of Curtis and
Mower Roads, south of Saginaw, off of highway M-13) at 6:00 p.m. to
car-pool into the refuge. Be sure to bring your binoculars, spotting
scopes, cameras, two-way radios, and mosquito repellent. In the event of
severe weather or soft road conditions, the tour will be cancelled.

Fall migrant shorebirds and swallows are already appearing at the refuge.
Waterfowl numbers are also starting to build as well. This is the time of
year when concentrations of great egret, great blue heron and black-crowned
night-heron start to swell. Breeding songbirds are still evident as the
nesting season winds down.
