Ok, who decided to have Christmas Counts around Christmas anyway? Horrible time of the year to count birds, that was the consensus of our field groups that went out on suprisingly slippery and impassable roads yesterday.
Despite cars in the ditches, time spent looking for a safe parking spot and snowshoeing in to areas that we usually drive to we didn't have too bad a day.
It looks like we will probably top 60 species. Best birds so far are an immature Glaucous Gull at First St. pier, strangely high numbers of Eastern Bluebirds, and a Hermit Thrush (hopefully still alive after the freeze shock wave today). Lake Michigan and the rivers were the only open water so other than 3,000+ Long-tailed Ducks the waterfowl count was low.
